Variables

Independent Variable: penny

Dependent Variable: substance, and time

Variables That Need To Be Controlled: some of the variables that need to e controlled are the substances that i put the penny's in and the time.

Hypothesis: i think that the vinegar and salt at 50 minuets will clean the penny the best.

General Plan

Experimental Design

I am going to conduct my experiment in my kitchen in my house because it is a good place to do it and the counters are easy to clean. There will be two subjects of this experiment me and my pennies. I will need to conduct this experiment probably 5 times with each substance. I will record my data on a data table.
I will make a document on my x-drive to hold all my data my table and pictures. Those are sine of the things that I will do in my experiment.

Materials and procedure.

Materials: Procedure: Step one:gather dirty pennies from couch,
Pennies jars, ect. Step two: Choose a substance like coke.
Coke Step three: Place a dirty pennies in the substance for
Dish soap 50 minutes step four: take out the pennies with a clean
Vinegar cloth and dry it, put it on a paper with the substance
A plate Name above it. Repeat steps 2-4 with other substances
Pencil
Paper
Cups

Background Research

Directions: In order to present yourself as a researcher who is well-educated on their science fair topic, you will need to gain some background information. Add your research to the table below. Be sure to write everything in your own words and cite your sources using oslis.org. You must use at least one book in your research.

1. Source: : Spangler, Steve. Naked Eggs and Flying Potatoes: Unforgettable Experiments That Make Science Fun. Austin, TX: Green leaf Book Group, 2010. Print.

1. Information: I got my idea from this source to clean pennies because the book Steve Spangler looks for the best thing to clean a penny. He uses things like sauces and vinegar and salt. This is was were I got all my ideas.

2. Source: How To Clean A Penny - How To Clean A Penny. Web. 17 Jan. 2012. <http://howtocleanapenny.weebly.com/>.

2. Information: I learned from this source that I should clean a penny by putting it in a substance for a medium period of time like 20 or 30 minuets each. I learned that after you clean 20 or so pennies in the same substance you can put a nail in there for 15 minutes and the nail will get a copper coating.

3. Information: from this source I learned that a penny is made from mostly zinc and a little copper because it is coated in copper. Penny used to be made in all copper in the 1800s but they stopped probably because it costed too much.

Data Analysis

Conclusion: in the end there were two pennies that weren't clean in the end but all the pennies that did get cleaned got different ways. like the dish soap cleaned the pennies and left a rainbow like shine like oil in water. the vinegar and salt left the Pennie orange and clean but more like a matte orange. the coke is the only one that left the Pennie still shiny clean and looking like a real Pennie. but the hot sauce and water didn't do anything.
